Louise Bourgeois: Organice Shape Artist
This piece, "crouching spider," is one of many giant sculptures of spiders crafted by Louise Bourgeois. The spindly, knobby, nonuniform legs suggest both life and movement. The whole sculpture, is texturally, structurally, and visually organic, hence--despite its unrealistic size and medium--it incurs the reflexive cringe associated with all creepy crawly things. The obscure yet threatening shape of this archetypal beast brings out in each viewer an embarassing, unjustified, yet primal fear.
