Artist Value - Vija Celmins
Different from Vija Celmins' other pieces in the ocean study, this monochromatic depiction has a vibrant energy. The stark contrast between the deep charcoal of the wave troughs and the bright white of the crests nearly creates a sense of vibration and constant motion. All of the details are very precise and fine. This takes the focus off the subject itself, which due to the uniformity of the chaos in this piece is lost, and makes the ocean surface into a pattern. The texture and energy seems to be the subject rather than the actual water. Somehow Celmins manages to articulate the depth and endlessness that the ocean embodies.
