Value Artist



This graphite drawing by Vija Celmins is a perfect example of a value drawing. She clearly uses value to define shapes, to the point that they aren't drawings anymore, but just shapes created from shadows and highlights. The grainy texture and blurred outline show that there really wasn't a drawing or outline there in the first place, but that the shapes are formed by the shading of the forms.
