Barbara Kruger

In this piece, Kruger uses value shifts to add to her political statement that woman's bodies are battlegrounds for consumerism. By splitting the figure's face in half and using drastic change in value and inverse as a technique, Kruger adds to the sense that there are opposing sides in this 'battle.' Also, the use of red as a background for the text adds to this battle metaphor [with red representing blood and conflict] and draws attention to the text. The high contrast between the red and the browns and grays draws the viewer's attention and evokes a sense of urgency.
