Barbara Kruger

Barbara Kruger uses a monochromatic color scheme with a complementary hue to achieve contrast. She dissects the image and juxtaposes the inverse of what we perceive to be a “normal” representation on the left, to form an interesting composition on the right. The bold contrast of white letters on red, along with the juxtaposition of red (strong hue) against a more saturated gray scale make the text jump out toward the viewer. It is clear that the message is meant to be noticed and read first. The image, however, is still captivating and its balance gives the viewer an uncomfortable sense of pressure and intimidation.
