Color Artist: Laylah Ali

This is Laylah Ali's "Type Drawing" of 2004 in oil pastel and watercolor pencil. She uses complementary colors blue and orange in the head of the figure as well as the feet, creating overall balance in the composition. The two contrasting hues emphasize the shape and contour of the head/hair. In addition, the body holds primary colors yellow and blue with their intermediate secondary color of green and the previously seen complementary color orange. The blue outlines paired with the yellow in the jacket are supplemented by the middle tone of green. and the pockets are well defined with a blue outline and an orange center. The tones and intensity of the colors vary across the piece as a hatching technique was used by the artist. Overall the artist takes advantage of color theory to emphasize certain details of the piece.
