"Jessie and the Deer" by Sally Mann

I really love this picture because it seems to be a paradox. You've got this cute little girl dressed up like a ballerina right next to a deer with its throat slit and what I can only imagine is a bucket of blood. It's adorable and disgusting at the same time. I think one of the things that makes this photograph so successful is its use of shading. The girl is bright and light, especially when contrasted with the dark pick-up truck, whereas the deer appears much darker. The composition is also great because your eye goes first to the girl, then to the deer, then down to the bucket of blood as you slowly piece together this somewhat unsettling photograph.
