This initially appears to be a simplistic, fairly one dimensional photograph by Hiroshi Sugimoto, but on closer inspection one can clearly see the depth in the sea scape. The contrast in shadows serves to emphasize the positive and negative space. The darker space towards the front of the picture serves to carry the eye forward, so that the overall effect is powerful.
