Hiroshi Sugimoto: Value Artist

"Theaters (UA Walker, New York)" by Hiroshi Sugimoto uses value to create a dynamic focal point by contrasting the even, light shade of the screen with the uneven, high-value darks surrounding it. This contrast is maintained in the light reflecting off of the seat backs, which appears increasingly stark as the value of the chairs darkens in each successive row. Though a real photograph, the high-end value scheme gives this theater a fantastical and enigmatic quality.
