I chose this photograph by Hiroshi Sugimoto because I have a poster of it hanging in my dorm room. I chose the poster because I was drawn to the very subtle changes in value that describe the calmness of the sea. Sugimoto works with a large-format camera and very long exposures which is what gives the photograph a velvety quality. The values shown in this work are enough to tell us that what we're seeing is water, but barely. The work definitely leans in the direction of abstraction.
