Ritual: Hannah Wilke

This self portrait by Hannah Wilke uses chewing gum shaped as vulva to look like growths or scars that contrast with the beauty and glamor of the existing composition. Wilke explains: “I chose gum because it’s the perfect metaphor for the American woman – chew her up, get what you want out of her, throw her out and pop in a new piece." The statement made by adding the gum blemishes to the purity of Wilke's feminine form is strong. It ties into the week's theme of seeing things as they are by challenging the iconic image of the female beauty. Her work is both surprising and compelling.
