Tara Donovan

Through this installation, Nickel-Plated Steel Pins Held Together by Friction & Gravity Only, Tara Donovan asks us to reconsider our notions of order and chaos. The thousands and thousands of little pins are chaotically arrayed to form a well ordered cube, which at least according to the title is kept together simply by the forces of gravity and friction. The structure effectively defies our understanding the laws of physics. It therefore offers us an entirely new visual experience. It gives us a glimpse into an inverted universe where friction and gravity are not forces that we must work against, but are rather forces that hold things together.
