Joseph Beuys
Beuys makes use of many symbols in this piece titled "Homogenous Infiltration for Piano". First, we have a piano, an instrument of majestic creativity. The curved lines on the gray felt cover seem to have a muting effect, almost suffocating the piano and trapping the music inside. The rigid lines of the red cross contrast with the soft fabric, evoking thoughts of government aid, and instances when it can stifle creativity.
