Tara Donovan - Untitled 2003

All of Tara Donovan's work appealed to me with her use of simple, repeated materials to create extraordinarily complex patterns and overall compositions.  The textures she creates in this piece are quite spectacular, transforming a common material, such as fishing line (as used in this piece) into animate creatures.  The lifelessness of this material now lives and breathes with the wind, swaying with its every movement.  Aesthetically, the color and crispness of the lines adds to the serenity of this work.  The meticulousness of this creation is evident, but manages not to overwhelm the viewer due to its incorporation into the whole; the single strands of line have sacrificed their individuality for the larger picture, while simultaneously holding on to their shape and form.
