alexander calder

Alexander Calder is an American sculptor and artist best known for his creation of the mobile — a sculpture exploring balance as an artistic technique. Other sculptures of his, while not mobiles by definition, also focused on the idea of balance in abstract art. I particularly like this piece by Calder. It creates the same emphasis of balance, but in two dimensions. The piece is clearly balanced, divided into two evenly "weighted" halves. He conveys weight not with the use of 3D mass, but instead color and density of lines.
