Richard Misrach: Diving Board, Salton Sea, 1983
Richard Misrach utilizes the design principle of balance within his work Diving Board, Salton Sea, 1983 to create a sense of calm and stability. While, this work is horizontally balanced and fairly symmetrical from the left to right, its imbalance vertically evokes a particular response from the viewer. The imbalance created by distributing the visual weight to the lower half of the composition enhances the solidity and tranquility of the piece. Despite the desolate landscape of this image, I cannot help but feel at ease and peaceful as I look at it, largely due to the artist’s use of balance and imbalance.
