William Pope L. is mainly a performance artist, who focuses on issues of consumerism, social class and race. This particular piece, though, is a sculpture, consisting of a potted plant spray painted heavily with black and blue paint. I think it's really effective, making the paint seem like an oppressive thing, inhibiting life and growth. I like the fact that he used an actual live plant and think that's part of what makes this piece so moving as a commentary on race in our society.
