John Cage's piece "Variations No. 22" is a simple yet beautiful piece. The dark circle against the blue gray background is suggestive of a moon at dusk. The materials used give the work an interesting yet subtle texture, and the different shades of blue and gray provide a sense of space and depth. This piece can better be appreciated alongside other similar works produced by Cage. For instance, "Variations No. 5" is a wonderfully crafted piece portraying a light circle on an orange background. The combination of these works side by side creates an interesting contrast of color and shape, reminiscent of a sun and moon. The works complement and balance each other, both through their contents and form.
