"Colony" by Tara Donovan

This work is a representation of the persistence of life. From afar we see something that looks like a colony of bacteria, the most abundant form of life on earth. It is ironic that the basic and pure biological organisms comprising the “colony”, a made of pencils, something wholly unnatural and manmade. Pencils, however, are made of wood—from plants, the essence of human life—and graphite, a form of carbon, which is the most essential and abundant biological element. As advanced as Man is to have created pencils, we are inextricably linked and integrated into the natural world.
