Brittany Katz: System Artist- Yoko Ono

I found this piece to be simple yet meaningful.  At a first glance, one notices the white knot of rope in stark contrast to the red background.  The bold texture and dimension of the rope make it stand out distinctly against the flat, simplicity of the plaque on which it lies.  The strong shadows cast add to this drama.  The knot, to a viewer, is instantly associated with its common symbolic meaning:  unity.  Upon further examination of the piece, one notices the subtle inscription at the bottom.  This statement now allows the piece to make sense in ones mind.  Ono's purpose with creating this piece is established, and it now bears a heavier burden in our minds.  However, the piece is special because it stands as a work of art with or without this inscription.
