SYSTEM ARTIST: Tim Hawkinson

This work is called ‘Emoter’ by Tim Hawkinson. It is composed of a number of photographs of the artist’s face. The images have been cut into fragments which can be moved by hydraulic mechanisms. The hydraulics are triggered by light sensors that are attached to the screen of a TV that is tuned to a random broadcast program. The sensors then transfer the flickering light into signals which control the movements of the features. I have actually seen this work when it was at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh and it is very interesting in person. To me, it is not only a fresh technology influenced approach to the classical portrait but it also brings forth a theme of how art is plastic, and can be ever-changing based on its inputs. This piece also reminded me of our class discussion of the difference between our preconceived notions of facial features (eyes are almond shaped and heads are ovals etc.) and their actual forms.
