Felix Gonzalez Torres - Social Consciousness Artist


This artwork is interesting because it takes on the idea of social consciousness in a different. way. Titled "Portrait of Ross in LA", the work consists of 175 pounds of candy on a pile. The viewer is welcomed to take a piece of the candy as a souvenir, therefore taking part of the work itself. Ross apparently was a friend of his that died of AIDS close to the date that this artwork was displayed. In a very original way, this work appears to portray death and brings it into public consciousness as every time someone takes a piece of candy, the pile gets reduced. The artist also died of AIDS which helps us understand why this topic was of great importance to him
