Ritual Artist: Ann Hamilton

This photograph by Ann Hamilton, one of twelve which she took at her installation at the Venice Biennale,  is interesting to me for a few reasons. The print makes me question the value of the precise or crisp line because it does not exist in the work, yet one still recognizes what the subject is. The question that comes to mind is, when can shading, color, or some other device create a full composition without lines? Hamilton is also relating to her environment in an interesting way here. The glass she uses in this work was part of a glass wall included in her installation. It, no doubt, brings up the image of water so prevalent in Venice, but it also plays with the concept of transparency vs. reflection. The image seems almost like it could be either.
