Elijah Gowin
I really love this piece, "Falling in Trees12", of Elijah Gowin's series Of Falling and Floating. There is a strong sense of anticipated motion in the man's slightly blurred outlind and unusually high distance from the ground, and the way his arms flex and his back arches makes it seem as if he is twisting in mid-air. My eye also moves from the plant stem in the lower right corner up along the curve of the man's body, imagining him leaping off the stem into mid-air. Past experience, however, and the way his clothes and hair fly upward lead me to think that this man is falling. Overall, the combination of these elements evoke a feeling of instability and lack of control.
