Matthew Ritchie

I found that I was instantly drawn to this work because of the use of texture and the juxtaposition of mediums used which serve to enhance the texture. At first glance the work could be seen as slightly overwhelming because of all the different textures, patterns and colors. Part of its appeal lies in the different lines which cut through the work of art and the use of two dimensional and three dimensional design. It is evident from this work of art that not only does Matthew Ritchie have a keen eye for detail, but he also does not limit himself to a certain medium or a certain style within a medium. For example, although many may find drawing limiting in terms of design, Ritchie believes that you can make a drawing, 'three-dimensional, you can make it flat, you can turn it into a sphere, you can just keep pushing and pushing it...' which transpires into his thoughtful and interesting work.
