Motion Artist: Elijah Gowin

Falling and Floating

This piece employs anticipated motion to catch and hold the viewer’s eye. Seeing a person in such a helpless position in freefall illicits in the viewer an almost reflexive jerk to catch his or her balance. Aware that the subject of this piece is about to strike the water, the eye constantly is looking up and down the piece, measuring the distance between the body and the surface, unable to shed its own experiences with gravity.
