Mark Bradford - The Devil is Beating His Wife (03)

Mark Bradford used a vast variety of found materials to create a work of great visual texture and interest. Within this single piece he used both paint and collage techniques, with the collaged elements ranging from pieces of old billboards to graffiti logos and hairdressers' endpapers. In this work, as in many of his others, he creates a pixellated effect with these materials. The range of finishes and juxtaposition of rough and smooth edges do not appear overly chaotic becauseof this pixellated, ordered grid. Instead, a rich visual series of textures is conveyed to the viewer.
The work's title suggests that the work is somewhat representative and thus the eye searches to make meaning out of these seemingly random (yet still visually pleasing) pixels, yet it remains unclear whether or not the work is ultimately non-representational or abstract.
