The piece by Maya Lin is constructed entirely of 2x4 chunks. The resulting texture is bricklike and cobblestoney, yet almost as “smooth” as a sand dune, the right angles lost in the overall curvature. The tactile appeal is to me what it would sound like and feel like to walk on.
