frank breuer
This untitled work by Frank Breuer uses repetition and proximity to their maximum effect. In the center of the frame is a mammoth pile of 18-wheeler trailers, all with the same Del Monte logo and the same trite phrase, “Say yes to the best.” These 12 trailers, all piled up on top of each other, dominate the frame and make everything else seem miniscule in comparison. Even the washed-out cranes and mountains in the background seem to give way under the gargantuan industrial refuse of Del Monte. The almost overwhelming presence of dingy beige in the photo gives the impression of a polluted, wasted world, which contrasts ironically with “Say yes to the best.” If Breuer’s goal was to subtly gibe the advertising industry and industrial wastelands, he’s done an excellent job.
