Kara Walker is an African American artist who is widely recognized for her explorations of race, gender, and ethnicity through the traditional 18th century medium of cut paper silhouettes. She created After the Deluge in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. She makes a statement by addressing modern day issues of race that were brought to the surface by the debacle in New Orleans by using the old fashioned medium of the silhouette.
