Louise Bourgeois

I love this piece by Louise Bourgeois, titled "Maman," created in 1999 and currently exhibited outside the Tate Gallery in London. It is more than nine meters high, made from steel and marble from which an edition of six bronzes were subsequently cast by the artist. This work was inspired by the artist's mother, who was a weaver (like a spider), and Louise's main protector (just as a spider protects us from unwanted and harmful bugs like mosquitos). I like how the negative space is just as important as the positive space in this sculpture... being able to walk through it, become a part of the piece, and see beyond the sculpture adds to the effect of the sculpture being powerful but all-encompassing.
