Louise Bourgeois is a French sculptor who now lives and works in New York City. Her most famous works are probably her spider structures that she calls "Maman". Bourgeois uses the spider structures as a way to explore the memories she has of her mother who died when she was 20. Bourgeois wrote, "My mother was deliberate, clever, patient, soothing, reasonable, dainty, subtle, indispensable, neat and useful as a spider." The egg sac under the belly of this spider is probably a symbol of the motherhood that Bourgeois represents. I love Bourgeois' depiction of the spider as something clever and elegant instead of something dark and menacing.
