Tara Donovon, Haze

l

I was immediately captivated by this installation created by Tara Donovon in 2003 titled Haze. From the first picture I viewed, it appears that the organic forms on the walls are one piece made from a wax-like material. However, the installation is completely transformed as the next picture takes you closer and the waxy surface is broken down into a detailed kaleidoscope. I was amazed to learn that the entire installation was created by gluing millions of clear drinking straws onto the walls of the gallery. Donovon’s work is known for utilizing large amounts of everyday items to create organic landscapes. I find it very interesting how the artist fuses the concepts of macro and micro and how the artist chooses to “privilege the viewer’s perspective.”
