This piece by Kara Walker is so powerful because of its strong shapes and expressive gestures. This is due to the artist's use of positive and negative space. She uses a strong outline to establish a distinction between the subject and the background, an idea we learned this week. I really like this piece, because it shows so much emotion without giving any detailed facial expressions.
