Janine Antoni
This piece uses conceptual unity because all of the materials she used are very different. To the viewer, other than the fact that they can be braided the materials have nothing in common. However, Antoni explains that all of the materials came from friends, most of which gave her materials from people who had died. Each piece was like giving a new life to the person who had died. The concept of using materials from those who passed away as a way of reincarnating their life force is what unites these materials in this piece. Conceptual unity like this sometimes has to be explained, but ultimately viewers appreciate the piece more knowing the story behind it.
