Louise Bourgeois: Spider

This is one of Louise Bourgeois's spiders in the Tuileries Gardens in Paris. The knobbiness of the spider's legs echos the organic forms of the tree branches beside it. The placement of the sculpture is interesting because the Tuileries are classical in plan. The spider could have looked out of place in such an atmosphere, but by placing it near the trees it manages to blend in. It also makes the piece of art all the more striking and almost a relief from the classical straight lines that predominate in the gardens.
