I love this piece, "Victory Boogie Woogie" by Piet Modrian, because it communicates so much joy and vivacity! I particularly like the way that the artist connects all of the rectangular shapes with other shapes and how he overlaps color to create unity within the piece. The bright yellow is striking against the red and the blue and the size variation between the rectangles creates a sense of movement, as if all of the shapes are bustling about. Modrian also utilizes negative space, leaving many parts of the piece blank, which prevents the image from appearing too chaotic. Repeating the rectangular shapes in white that normally appear in color also provides an interesting variation in the pattern that, at first, seems most obvious among the positive shapes.
