Positive/Negative Space Artist: Kara Walker

Kara Walker's use of Negative/ Positive space is interesting as she uses old fashion silhouette cut outs to create positive space against a simple white wall. This piece is interesting because it depicts an african american woman committing suicide, yet because of her use of decorative lines and stereotypical shapes, it is made to look less disturbing than it should, as even beautiful and whimsical. This is probably her way of critiquing history's view on many things that happened in antebellum America.
