Rachel Whiteread

As a commander in the British empire, Rachel Whiteread is best known for her unique sculptures, which mainly come in the form of casts. In this piece from 1990 called Ghost, where she casted an entire living space became her defining master piece. This plays with the idea of positive and negative space because as most sculptures create the main contour of the object, her pieces capture the negative space of the room (the part inside of the room, not the outside walls). Conceptually, this concept is difficult; however, her piece allows the contrast between positive and negative space to be seen easier.
