Untitled (Rope Piece) by Eve Hesse
It's beautiful and droopy. She made it while she was dying, and hers was not a happy life. It's made of latex over rope, string and wire. Is there unity? Unity through color, yes. Unity through proximity, yes. Unity through variation? I'm not sure what this means exactly, but probably yes. And I understand that unity sounds unbearably academic, but in this piece, it's just necessary, for the piece to show off its droopiness and tangled maze, to have some firm ground from which a person can approach the piece.I can't say why I find it beautiful. This one blurs the boundary between stuff I know I like and stuff I can't really understand. Of course, that's where it belongs.
