Alicia Dillard:Positive/Negative Shape Artist-Kara Walker

This is a wonderful piece entitled “Cut” by Kara Walker. The use of black and white accentuates the use of space in this work. The blood that sprays from her wrist forms what is almost an ominous being above her—it is amazing how Walker created this image with two curved lines and the thickness of the curves. The other interesting part of this piece is that the other hand looks like it is holding a rose, except it seems like the hand was cut off. The best part of this piece for me is the girl’s feet. I would think that if the girl were being cut her feet would be flailing or at least separated, instead the feet are touching and only the tippy-toes of both feet meet the ground.
