kiki smith

This work by Kiki Smith is called "Constellation". I think the piece is interesting as a whole because it has a strong conceptual unity on a large scale. We can identify the work (with help from the title) easily. In addition the details of the small glass figures are linked by concept (animal figures) and medium. I think Kiki Smith brings together her concept of the human relation to nature and animals beautifully relying on the common human fascination with stars and the universe. I also thought this work was interesting because it is displayed on the floor, rather than above one's head. I think it ultimately makes the viewer question our relation to the stars/ universe (are we inferioir for looking up to them?) as well as our relation to nature ( are we superior for looking down on them?)
