This work titled “Mortar and Pestle” by Janine Antoni is interesting to say the least. Aside from the disturbing and pseudo-painful feeling that arises when looking at this painting, one has to admit that the image of the tongue caressing the eye ball is an ingenious image to invoke a sense of unity. Everything in this work is united, everything is touching: the curve of the lips run into the teeth, the teeth run into the tongue, and the tongue touches the iris of an eye. The unity also lies in the functions, that the objects in this picture are involved in. The tongue is associated with taste and the eye is associated with seeing—both of which are senses.

Alicia Dillard:Conceptual Unity-Janine Antoni
This work titled “Mortar and Pestle” by Janine Antoni is interesting to say the least.
